Course: Caries Management

 

Objectives:

Recent studies have offered new insight into caries formation and management. The old ‘old standard’ of drill and fill no longer applies.  This session will elucidate on the current concepts in caries formation, diagnosis, risk assessment, and monitoring. Also included are how to do a Caries Risk Assessment using the CAMBRA form and how to interpret it and how to implement treatment.  Specific information will be given on when to treat and not treat as well as how to manage caries with fluoride, SDF, and fluoride varnish and interproximal sealants.  Participants will be able to apply this information in creating a more friendly atmosphere with less drilling and more managing.

 

 Goals:

1. Explain the use of ITR vs ATR and give an example of when you would use each

2. Explain how Candida albicans causes caries and its relationship to S mutans.

3. Describe the ICDAS caries classification and when do you treat caries vs not treat

4. Describe saliva’s role in caries production and prevention.

5. Explain how someone with perfect hygiene and diet can still get caries
