Description:

This lecture will give the dental team a new understanding of the current concepts of caries formation as well as how to prevent the recurrence of caries.  Learners will become familiar with a new and improved CRA form which will more effectively pinpoint the causes of caries.  Also, new concepts in ICDAS classification will inform the dental team when treatment is not needed.  The topic of prevention will include the proper use of fluoride, indirect pulp caps and sealing over non-cavitated lesions.  The dental team will gain information and knowledge that can be used in clinic the next day.

 

Objectives:

 

  1.  Learn the protocol for SDF application
  2. Recognize the role of medications in the caries process
  3. List the elements that make caries a pH mediated disease
  4. Learn the limitations fluoride in caries prevention

 

Goals:

 

  1.  Role of SDF in MID
  2. Understand the role of a good medical history including all medications
  3. Know caries as a pH mediated disease and that it has little to do with Strep Mutans
  4. Caries prevention is no longer your grandfather’s toothbrushing
