Learning Objectives:
1. Learn about the process of vaping and the legal and illegal e-juice misuse, including vaping in the classroom
2. Learn how vaping leads to the risk of caries, periodontal disease and 'popcorn lung'
3. Understand the link between vaping and cocaine addiction and smoking marijuana
Course Summary:
Over the last several years, more states are legalizing recreational marijuana and more teens are vaping. This course will show the health risks of vaping and how vaping results in future cigarette smoking. In one section, a presentation will show how this increase in teen vaping increases the risk of caries and marijuana smoking. Last, with new US and UK research in this area, a segment will the link between marijuana smoking in teens and adult schizophrenia and an increase in teen violence. This information will help the practitioner recognize such habits in their patients and offer insight into managing it and offering methods of helping these patients.
Course Objectives:
Epidemiological studies have shown that 30% of children and 20% of all US teens have sustained dental trauma. 5 million teeth are avulsed yearly at a cost of $500 million in repairing the problem. This session will discuss the contemporary concepts in the biology, diagnosing, treatment, and prevention of common pediatric dental injuries. Also, when to not treat will be discussed. At the conclusion, the learner will be able to properly assess and treat the myriad of dental injuries the practitioner may face in practice.
Course Objectives:
An evidence-based, minimally invasive treatment option for the management of severe early childhood caries is the Hall technique. It’s known that caries is a biofilm disease, and carious lesions are the result of a dysbiosis in the Biofilm. Systematic reviews demonstrate that complete caries removal is not necessary for caries management in an otherwise healthy, asymptomatic tooth. Instead, placing a sealed restoration like a Stainless Steel Crown is preferred for caries management. This minimally invasive approach is particularly advantageous for young, apprehensive patients, who may otherwise require sedation for traditional surgical interventions. This session will discuss the indications, contraindications, and the simple steps to doing this very successful procedure. Participating clinicians will be able to use this treatment modality in everyday clinical practice.
Course: Pedo Pearls – Silver Diamine Fluoride
This session will demonstrate the current evidence on the effectiveness of silver diamine fluoride (SDF) as a safe and affordable caries arresting and preventive agent. SDF can be used as a comprehensive caries management program. Systematic reviews have demonstrated that SDF is effective for caries arrest on cavitated lesions in primary and permanent teeth and root caries in the elderly. It may also prevent new lesions. This session will present the indications and contraindications for its use. Next, the discussion will center on the easy and noninvasive steps on how to apply it. Although it stains the lesions dark as it arrests them, it provides clinicians with an additional tool for caries management when esthetics are not a primary concern.
Course Objectives:
Recent studies have offered new insight into caries formation and management. The old ‘old standard’ of drill and fill no longer applies. This session will elucidate on the current concepts in caries formation, diagnosis, risk assessment, and monitoring. Also included are how to do a Caries Risk Assessment using the CAMBRA form and how to interpret it and how to implement treatment. Specific information will be given on when to treat and not treat as well as how to manage caries with fluoride, SDF, and fluoride varnish and interproximal sealants. Participants will be able to apply this information in creating a more friendly atmosphere with less drilling and more managing.
Course Objectives:
Dental restorative materials seem to keep improving daily. This topic will discuss some of these materials including Glass Ionomer Cement as a better alternative to resins. The Slot Prep for Class 2 lesions in primary and permanent teeth will also be presented as a way of doing minimally invasive dentistry (MID). A discussion on when to do ART and ITR will also be presented. Completing this talk will be a discussion on the rationale for not using benzocaine bases topical anesthetics and why Articaine is a better alternative than Lidocaine. By the end of this presentation, the learner will be able to do more successful and predictable pediatric dental restorations with less stress for the clinician and the patient.
Course Objectives:
Have you ever seen your patient list for the next day only to find that there are a lot of pediatric patients? Does this make you start to shake and sweat? Well, have no fear. This course is for you. We all know safe and successful pediatric dental treatment depends on patient cooperation. This session will go beyond Tell-Show-Do and help the practitioner know that while there is no magic fairy dust in pedo to getting a patient to cooperate there are some insights and techniques to help achieve this. First, there will be a discussion on what you can and can not change. Then, there will be a segment on the role of prenatal stress on future child behavior and how it is a risk factor for more caries, how to predict child behavior, and how to manage the patient with ADHD. Simple and effective communication skills and techniques based on new and emerging research in pediatric psychology and when to defer treatment with SDF, ITR and ATR, and treatment plan modification will be presented. At the end of the session, the practitioner will be more confident to face successfully any child behavior in the office.
MIH is a type of enamel defect affecting first molars and incisors in permanent dentition. It is a worldwide problem and usually manifests in children under the age of 10 years old. This webinar will help dental professionals to recognize and diagnose MIH similarities and variations in pediatric patients vs. adult patients. It will also help to describe the multifactorial causes of MIH and finally the various treatment options dependent upon the severity of the anomaly of MIH.
